Vardan PDF Troopers

Vardan PDF Troopers eliminate Ork threats that emerge from the Deep Jungle.

The Vardan Planetary Defence Force was formed in the wake of the Betrayal at Varda, after the need for a garrison force beyond Space Marines of the Ghosts of Retribution became apparent.

As Varda is a sovereign planet of the Ghosts of Retribution, the professional soldiers of the planet that would normally be tithed into the Imperial Guard instead form the strong core of Varda's PDF; in addition to the typical militia-type force that is summoned when necessary.

Utilising materials mostly recycled from the defeated Frateris Militia, the 1st and 2nd Vardan PDF Regiments were fully trained and officially formed in 345.M41.

Regiment Definitions[]

Infantry Regiment[]

Infantry regiment structure focuses on versatility, allowing the regiment to proficiently fight against any threat. The standard equipment of the typical guardsman in Vardan infantry regiments is stripped down and lightened compared to most. Heavy crew-served weapons are not included at the squad level, instead substituted with one medium machine gun per squad that only requires a single man to operate. This is to give them greater speed and mobility through dense terrain such as the thick Vardan jungle. The Vardan configuration of Infantry Regiment also does not contain any heavy artillery units such as Earthshaker Cannons at the Battalion level, as these are too large and heavy to deploy throughout most of the Vardan jungle.

A standard Infantry Regiment (or Cohort if part of a combined Regiment) consists of 11 Battaltions. The HQ Battalion (also known as 0th Battalion) is Regimental Headquarters. Battalions 1-8 are uniformly structured 'Line Battalions' that are deployed as a single formation. Battalions 9 & 10 are 'Auxiliary' Battalions composed of various supplementary Companies that are utilised for more specialised duties. Within a Line Battalion, five Infantry Companies form the units' core fighting strength while two Support Companies are composed of units dedicated to operating special weapons, heavy weapons and field ordnance. In practice units from the Support Companies will be attached to the Infantry Companies based on their firepower requirements, while the Support Companies' command sections will be stationed with the wider Battalion Command to coordinate their units. The 1st Infantry Company in a Line Battalion is a veteran company, composed of the Battalions' most experienced squads, and will often be personally led by the Battalion commander to undertake the most important duties.

Unit Structures[]

Regimental Headquarters: ~1588 Troopers

The Regimental Headquarters consists of the regiment's Colonel and the command & support echelons of the regiment. This element also includes personnel that are ostensibly a part of other units or adeptuses but attached to the regiment on a relatively permanent basis, such as Preachers, Sisters Hospitaller, Enginseers of the Adeptus Mechanicus and liaison officers from other Regiments or the Imperial Navy. An Infantry Regiments' Regimental Headquarters will typically contain the following units:

  • Intelligence Company - The high command of the Regiment. This Company consists of the Colonel, senior command staff, and all personnel assigned to assist in their duties such as communications specialists, adjutants, and bodyguards.
  • Commissariat Company - Consisting of all Commissariat personnel assigned to the Regiment. The most senior Commissar will assign lesser Commissars to the Regiments' Battalions.
  • Ecclesiastic Company - Consisting of all members of the Ecclesiarchy assigned to the Regiment. Almost all Regiments will be accompanied by a number of Priests (proportional to the size of the regiment) whose duty is to oversee the regular prayers and sermons of the Imperial faith, as well as oversee burials and last rites. Amongst these Priests there will also be Battle Preachers who actively take to the field of battle alongside the soldiers of the regiment. This unit also includes any Sisters Hospitaller attached to the regiment, though they will be assisting the Medical Company most of the time.
  • Medical Company - Consisting of the Regiment's medical personnel. Doctors and Surgeons will operate from a dedicated Regimental aid post while trained field medics will be assigned to Battalions. Sisters Hospitaller may also be attached. This formation is particularly large within Infantry regiments due to the number of potential wounded, and usually operates a number of dedicated field Ambulances like the Samaritan for transporting wounded to Service Regiments for long-term care.
  • Combat Engineering Company - Typically the size of a standard Infantry Company, this formation is composed of trained sappers capable of performing engineering tasks under combat conditions such as mine clearance, minelaying, demolitions, and fortification construction. They operate a number of Engineering and Mine Clearance vehicles.
  • Psykana Company - Consisting of any personnel from the Scholastica Psykana attached to the regiment. This can include prescient psykers attached to regimental command as advisers, battle psykers deployed to the frontline units, or support psykers assisting the Medical units. While the members of this Company take their orders from the Regiment's commissioned officers, it has an internal hierarchy where more senior Primaris Psykers will oversee the progress of younger psykers, arrange them into squads, and ensure they are always being put to the best use by the regiment's commanders.
  • Auxilia Company - Consisting of any abhuman units attached to the regiment. While many regiments have no such units at all, the most common type of abhuman found within Infantry Regiments is the Ogryn. Ogryn Auxilia are usually arranged into small squads and attached to frontline companies expected to see the heaviest action. Ratlings are also fairly common, and are usually organised into small scout sniper squads for performing recon and assassination missions at the battalion level.
  • Maintenance Company - Consisting of all Enginseers attached to the Regiment as well as soldiers trained to assist them in their duties. This formation is responsible for the repair and maintenance of any machine too complex to be handled by the operating unit. This formation also operates recovery vehicles like the Atlas.
  • Logistics Company - Generally the largest part of any Regimental Headquarters, the Logistics Company is in charge of all supply lines and non-combat transportation for the regiment. In battle conditions they will man the regimental supply depot as well as smaller field depots and will manage the extensive and complex task of transporting regular munitions shipments, requisition orders, and personnel to (and from) the fighting Battalions. Outside of active battle conditions the Logistics Company has overall authority over the Battalions to transport them where ordered. They operate a large number of logistical vehicles including Trojans, Centaurs, Arvus Lighters, and a huge number of cargo trucks - many of which may be requisitioned and used by the fighting Battalions at any given time.

Drop Trooper Regiment[]

A Drop Trooper Regiment is a formation of airborne infantry that deploy to battle via aircraft. Generally lightly armed and equipped, the advantages of the Drop Trooper Regiment are in its ability to deploy over extremely long distances at a high speed. It can respond to enemy activities many thousands of kilometres away at a short notice and can circumvent entire battle lines and fronts to deploy against the enemy in vulnerable locations. Due to its high concentration of troop-carrying aircraft however the Drop Trooper Regiment is an extremely expensive formation to field, thus greatly limiting its numbers.

While the majority of the regiment consists of trained infantry soldiers it also has a large maintenance component for servicing the regiment's aircraft, as well as pilots and other aircrew. In addition to troop-carrying aircraft, Drop Trooper Regiments also contain complements of airborne gunships to provide vital close-in support for the infantry. This is critical as, due to the nature of their deployment method, Drop Troop Regiments do not contain any medium or heavy armoured vehicles, leaving gunships as their only option against heavily armoured enemy targets. The fighting battalion structure is much less rigid than in Infantry regiments, as given the nature of their deployment every part of the fighting battalion must be prepared to mobilise, assault, or defend as needed depending on the situation they jump into. Soldiers in Drop Trooper Regiments are subject to significantly higher standards and far more rigorous training than those in Infantry regiments, as they must often operate with minimal support for extended periods of time in often chaotic battle conditions. Thus it is often the case within PDFs that already-trained soldiers from Infantry regiments can apply for airborne training to join a more elite Drop Trooper regiment, and such applicants naturally have a much better success rate than completely new recruits attempting to join the Drop Troopers. Similarly Grenadier units - the most elite soldiers of any PDF - tend to draw many of their infantry personnel from Drop Trooper regiments.

A fighting battalion's support company consists of vehicles and light artillery carried into combat either by utilitarian Valkyrie Sky Talons or cable-lifted by Valkyries or Angeluses and does not operate as a single force. Instead the support company will typically remain in reserve until the infantry have deployed and the battalion commander can determine where the support can be best utilised. Once deployed the vehicles are essentially put under the command of the nearest officer, whilst the light artillery will be deployed where its fire can be directed wherever needed. The Gunship Squadrons are similarly deployed on a where-needed basis. Frontline commanders relay their situations to regimental command, and the Vulture Gunships are dispatched in Flights to conduct strafing runs and provide fire support as directed by the ground commanders. While incredibly destructive, Vulture Gunships expend their ammunition quickly so must frequently retreat to the regiments' base of operations to rearm.

Unit Structures[]

Regimental Headquarters: ~356 Troopers

The Regimental Headquarters consists of the regiment's Colonel and the command & support echelons of the regiment. This element also includes personnel that are ostensibly a part of other units or adeptuses but attached to the regiment on a relatively permanent basis, such as Preachers, Sisters Hospitaller, Enginseers of the Adeptus Mechanicus and liaison officers from other Regiments or the Imperial Navy. A Drop Trooper Regiments' Regimental Headquarters will typically contain the following units:

The rapid medevac available to Drop Trooper regiments means the Regimental aid post is often very busy.
Battle psykers are especially valuable to Drop Trooper regiments as they can provide extreme offensive power within a small, easily transported unit.
  • Auxilia Company - Consisting of any abhuman units attached to the regiment. Abhumans within Drop Troop Regiments are rare as the assault carriers and grav chutes utilised by the regiment for deployment are rarely compatible. Of all abhumans, Ratlings are most favoured by Drop Troop Regiments as their small size, affinity for stealth, and recon sniper talents are very valuable to the regiments' usual operations.
  • Maintenance Company - Consisting of all Enginseers attached to the Regiment as well as soldiers trained to assist them in their duties. This formation is responsible for the repair and maintenance of any machine too complex to be handled by the operating unit. In a Drop Trooper Regiment crews are trained to maintain their own aircraft, so the Maintenance Company only handles the most complex problems with the sophisticated machines.
  • Logistics Company - Due to the entirely airborne nature of the Regiment, designed to be deployed without expected resupply, the Logistics Company in a Drop Trooper Regiment is relatively small and is primarily responsible for distributing supplies to the Battalions whilst awaiting deployment. They operate Arvus lighters and other shuttlecraft to move cargo.

Aeronautica Wing[]

An Aeronautica Wing is an airborne warfare formation that operates military aicraft of all kinds. The majority of its personnel are pilots, enginseers and ground crew devoted to the maintenance & operation of the aircraft, however each Wing also contains defence units that protect the airbase in which the aircraft are based. While each Aeronautica wing will have a permanent 'home' Airbase and the aircraft themselves have tremendous range, each Wing also has the personnel and equipment needed to set up temporary airstrips at almost any location.

A single Aeronautica Wing consists of five squadrons, a Command component, and an Engineering component. The Command & Engineering components are devoted to the large amount of logistics and organisation that Aeronautica units demand. Squadrons 1-4 are Aircraft Squadrons and thus each will operate a full squadron of Aircraft, the numbers and classes of which will vary by type of squadron. The 5th Squadron is an Airbase Defence Squadron composed of ground-based combat units including Anti-Aircraft units, and is designed to protect the Wing's Home Airbase as well as any satellite airbases.

Other Unit Structures[]

Wing Command: ~836 Command Crew

  • Consists of the Wing's Colonel and the command echelons of the Wing. This includes a large number of logistical personnel who ensure ammunition and other supplies are available for the wing's aircraft and defence units. It also includes a large number of intelligence officers and vox operators whose duty is to process gathered intel and maintain contact with the wing's aircraft as they fly, instructing them and warning them of new developments. Wing Command will usually contain the following units:
    • Intelligence Squadron - The high command of the Wing. This Squadron consists of the Colonel, senior command staff, and all personnel assigned to assist in their duties such as communications specialists, adjutants, and bodyguards. In an Aeronautica Wing this formation is extensive, including radar installations and long-range communications officers and equipment.
    • Controller Squadron - This squadron is a formation of Officers and NCOs that are deployed as liaison officers to other Regiments within the Wing's sphere of operations. Known as Aeronautica Controllers, these personnel can be deployed anywhere from Regimental command posts to right on the frontlines, where they use their expertise and communications access to arrange Aeronautica strikes at the request of the local Regimental Officers. Many Controllers are pilots themselves who have been grounded for any number of reasons. However permanent dedicated Aeronautica Controllers are primarily drawn from the Airbase Defence Squadrons, trained to keep up with Regimental Combat units of all kinds. Aeronautica Recon Controllers are the most highly-trained and often number no more than a single small team in each Wing, and they are trained to undertake solo missions deep into enemy territory to call in precision Aeronautica strikes.
    • Commissariat Unit - Generally speaking Aeronautica Wings are unlikely to have more than a single Commissar who oversees the command staff and punishes any aircrew who exhibited cowardice in battle yet survived to return.
    • Ecclesiastic Unit - Consisting of all members of the Ecclesiarchy assigned to the Wing. Almost all Wings will be accompanied by a handful of Priests whose duty is to oversee the regular prayers and sermons of the Imperial faith, as well as oversee burials and last rites. This unit also includes any Sisters Hospitaller attached to the regiment, though they will be assisting the Medical Squadron most of the time.
    • Medical Squadron - Consisting of the Wing's medical personnel. Due to the low number of personnel in an Aeronautica Wing expected to see regular combat, this formation is fairly small but due to the value of highly trained pilots and aircrew is usually composed of the most competent Doctors and Surgeons.
    • Logistics Squadron - This formations' regular duties include the transportation and storage of munitions, parts, personnel, and aircraft themselves both to, from, and around the Wing's airbase. When the Wing is moving its airbase the Logistics Squadron takes de facto command of the entire Wing to get all materiel and personnel packed, loaded and shipped. The Logistics Squadron operates a large number of cargo aircraft including Arvus Lighters, Marauder Transporters, and larger Halo Barges.

Wing Engineering: ~1248 Engineering Crew

  • The largest component of an Aeronautica Wing. Aircraft require an enormous amount of maintenance and that is Wing Engineering's most important duty. Consisting of a large number of techpriests, enginseers, and technical troopers, these personnel will be spread across the airbase maintaining aircraft and all the other machines in the Wing. They are responsible for loading and re-arming aircraft and therefore handle a significant amount of dangerous ordnance - sometimes in hard-pressed battle conditions. They are also responsible for setting up temporary bases and communication posts where necessary, and when these take them into hostile territory they will work closely with Airbase Defence Troopers. Wing Engineering operates a large number of Trojan Utility Vehicles and Arvus Lighters for towing machinery and moving supplies around.

Vardan PDF Irregulars

A team of Novomark Irregulars mop up surviving Frateris Militia in Novomark.

Grenadier Battalion[]

A formation of elite infantry, Grenadiers are veteran soldiers drawn from other fighting units to form their own companies of superior troops. These experienced troops are given far superior equipment to their more common brethren, with carapace armour and hellguns as standard issue along with a large amount of armoured transportation. Grenadiers are effective against almost any type of enemy, but the low availability of experienced troops and the high cost of their equipment means Grenadier units must be formed in much smaller numbers than standard infantry.

Novomark Irregulars[]

The Novomark Irregulars is a 525-strong force of soldiers conscripted in the middle of the Betrayal at Varda, equipped with the very finest weapons and armour that could be recovered from defeated forces. Primarily Mormarkian Imperial Guard Veterans, the Irregulars assisted in the defence of the Planetary Governor's Palace in the closing stages of the conflict. Current commander of the Novomark Irregulars is Major Tyre Arden, a long-time veteran of the Mormarkian Imperial Guard before he moved to Varda.
